Revenue increased 20% to $5.8 million
OAKVILLE, ON, Nov. 7, 2019 /CNW/ - Cipher Pharmaceuticals Inc. (TSX:CPH) ("Cipher" or "the Company") today announced its financial and operating results for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2019. Unless otherwise noted, all figures are in U.S. dollars.
Q3 2019 Financial and Corporate Highlights
(All figures compared to Q3 2018, unless otherwise noted)
- Total revenue increased 20% to $5.8 million from $4.8 million
- Licensing revenue increased 11% to $3.6 million from $3.3 million
- Product revenue increased 40% to $2.2 million from $1.6 million
- Selling, general and administrative expenses decreased 58% to $1.3 million from $3 million
- Adjusted EBITDA1 increased 149% to $3.7 million compared to $1.5 million
- Net loss from continuing operations was $2.2 million, or a loss of $0.08 per basic and diluted share, compared with net income from continuing operations of $0.74 million, or $0.03 per basic and diluted share.
- Accelerated debt prepayment of $2.0 million in addition to the regular scheduled payment of $2.0 million
- Subsequent to quarter end, on October 10, 2019 Cipher received a Notice of Compliance from Health Canada approving the sale of TRULANCE.
"We continue to make progress on our near-term priorities, including our focus on cost optimization and improving profitability" said Mr. Craig Mull, Interim CEO. "I am pleased that we were able to achieve a 58% decrease in SG&A costs while delivering 20% top line growth. Net income in the quarter was negatively impacted by restructuring costs and impairment charges related to the strategic review of the business; adjusting for those factors, profitability is trending in the right direction."
As previously announced, the Board of Directors appointed a Special Committee to target distribution partnerships for the Canadian commercial assets. The strategic review process generated interest from multiple parties and is progressing as anticipated.

On October 10, 2019 Health Canada approved Trulance in the form of a once-daily tablet for the treatment of adults with irritable bowel syndrome. "We are pleased Trulance achieved Health Canada approval and we are excited to be able to bring this new and effective treatment option to Canadians. said Mr. Mull.
Q3 2019 Financial Review
(All figures are in U.S. dollars, unless otherwise noted)
Total net revenue increased by $1.0 million or 20% to $5.8 million for Q3 2019 compared to $4.8 million for Q3 2018.
Licensing revenue increased by $0.3 million or 11% to $3.6 million for Q3 2019 compared to $3.3 million for Q3 2018. Licensing revenue from Absorica was $2.6 million for Q3 2019, which remained relatively unchanged from Q3 2018. Licensing revenue from Lipofen and the authorized generic version of Lipofen was $0.8 million for Q3 2019 compared to $0.6 million for Q3 2018. Licensing revenue from Conzip was $0.2 million for Q3 2019 an increase of $0.1 million compared to revenue of $0.1 million for Q3 2018.
Product revenue increased by $0.6 million or 40% to $2.2 million for Q3 2019 compared to $1.6 million for Q3 2018. Product revenue from Epuris increased to $1.9 million for Q3 2019 compared to $1.4 million for Q3 2018. Epuris had a prescription market share of over 40% in Canada for the three months ended September 30, 2019 compared to 34% for the three months ended September 30, 2018. Product revenue for the remaining brands, Ozanex, Beteflam, Actikerall, Brinavess, Aggrastat and Vaniqa was $0.3 million for Q3 2019 compared to $0.2 million for Q3 2018.
Total operating expenses increased $2.8 million, primarily due to a $3.5 million of impairment charge and $0.8 million of restructuring costs for Q3 2019. During the quarter, the Company re-considered its efforts to out license ASF1096, the remaining asset in the Astion portfolio. The Company wrote off the net book value of $1.1 million. Additionally, as part of the Company's strategic review of the business, the licensing agreements for A-101 and Xydalba were terminated. The Company recorded an impairment charge of $2.4 million, representing the carrying value of those assets.
Selling, general and administrative ("SG&A") expense was $1.3 million for Q3 2019 a decrease of 58% compared to $3.0 million for Q3 2018. The decrease in SG&A costs was driven by a reduction in costs associated with human resources and a reduction in sales and marketing spend.
